Playboy Jazz Festival History and Biography
From Pulitzer Prize-winning trumpeter/jazz composer Wynton Marsalis and sassy blues high priestess Etta James to a performance by dance superstar Savion Glover and his new tap dance group Ti Dii (pronounced tie dye), the 26th anniversary Playboy Jazz Festival maintains its grand tradition of diversity, mixing tremendously talented name acts and cutting edge artists. With sounds from around the globe, this year's multi-culti two-day lineup includes South African trumpeter Hugh Masekala; versatile 31-year-old virtuoso Brian Culbertson with contemporary Danish saxman Michael Lington; Kátia Moraes & Sambaguru, an effervescent sextet led by the Brazilian singer-lyricist; and Jazz on the Latin Side All Stars, a tight, 16-piece ensemble of bandleaders, among them renowned percussionist Poncho Sanchez and acclaimed drummer Alex Acuña. The party band Yerba Buena, a unique blend of African-rooted Latin music with hip-hop, Motown soul, Nigerian Afrobeat and Middle Eastern rhythms, is guaranteed to bring you to your feet. Also on the bill you'll find Charlie Parker-influenced saxophone virtuoso Charles McPherson; the banjo-based "mountain music of Béla Fleck and the Flecktones,; Grammy-winning, 33-year-old trumpeter/composer Roy Hargrove; smooth jazz combo BWB; and an all-star quartet comprising jazz legends Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland and Brian Blade. The 2004 Playboy Jazz Festival is the first event in the newly renovated Hollywood Bowl with an all-new band shell. For the second year, you can see the action close-up on big-screen monitors, day and night. The two-day event is hosted by perennial Master of Ceremonies, comedian and jazz aficionado Bill Cosby, on Saturday and Kevin Eubanks on Sunday. |
